GHANA’S sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu has explained the circumstances that led to the 4×100m relay team’s disqualification at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Saminu runs the first leg for a real team comprising Benjamin Azamati, Ibrahim Fuseini, and Joseph Paul Amoah.
The team crossed the line in 38.62s in Heat 2 but were disqualified for an infringement during the baton exchange.
Saminu said, “I think with the first call, I missed the hand, so I had to bring it back again to (to make the legal contact). So next time we just make sure we correct the mistakes and come back again.”
Thursday’s mishap at the Olympic Games was the latest setback after repeated incidents of failed baton exchange.
The time 38.62s was their slowest in recent years, compared to their previous marks of 38.07s, 38.08s, and 38.29s.
Ghana has no remaining athletes at the Olympic Games after consecutive disappointing results in track and field events.
