LEGENDARY Juju musician, Sunday Adeniyi Adejeye (professionally known as King Sunny Ade) has pledged to honour the memory of the late Onyeka Onwenu by continuing to perform their iconic duet “Wait for Me,” which was released in 1989.
During a condolence visit to Onwenu’s family at her Ikoyi residence in Lagos, KSA, as he is fondly called, expressed his deep respect and admiration for the late singer, emphasizing that her legacy would live on through their music.
The visibly emotional musician KSA described Onwenu as an extraordinary woman whose advice was always valuable and insightful. “I will perform ‘Wait for Me’ in her honour for the rest of my life. I’ve performed it in various countries, always giving credit to her,” he said.
Reflecting on their collaboration, KSA praised Onwenu’s dedication and creativity in their joint musical projects. He also dispelled longstanding rumours that the two were romantically involved, clarifying that the speculation arose from their close professional relationship and the chemistry they shared in their duets.
Also, reggae legend Orits Williki paid tribute to Onwenu, highlighting her commitment to justice and intellectual property rights. He lamented that Onwenu did not fully reap the benefits of her efforts, noting that she had recently won two significant Supreme Court judgments.
Both music icons expressed their sorrow over Onwenu’s passing, but they affirmed that her legacy would continue to inspire and resonate within the music industry and beyond.
