A devastating incident has unfolded at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, Imo State, sparking widespread outrage and horror.
A doctor’s decision to watch a YouTube tutorial during a Caesarean section (C-section) has resulted in the tragic loss of both a pregnant woman and her baby.
C-section is a surgical procedure where a baby is delivered through an incision made in the birth parent’s abdomen and uterus.
According to a heart-wrenching video shared on Instagram by Nollywood producer Stanley Ontop, the bereaved husband, Onyekachi Eze, recounted the traumatic experience.
Narrating the incident, Eze said, “I carried my wife to the hospital when she was in labour, and the doctor said she needed to undergo an operation because she was bleeding.
“So the female doctor called another doctor to come and operate on her. Right in my presence, they were using their phones to watch a YouTube video on how to perform surgery, and I lost my wife and my baby during the process.”
The duo later visited the Imo Police Command to report the incident on Tuesday.
The public outcry has prompted swift action from law enforcement, resulting in the arrest of the hospital’s owner.
Shortly after the report, Stanley shared an updated video showing how the owner of the hospital was arrested by the police after the doctors absconded.
Captioning the video, he wrote, “The owner of the hospital where doctors were watching YouTube on how to perform surgery on a pregnant woman has been arrested. Nurses were arrested too, but the doctors who performed the surgery had absconded. They are still being searched for.”
Authorities have also detained several nurses for questioning, while a manhunt is underway to apprehend the doctors allegedly involved in the botched surgery.
