FORMER President of the United States of America and presidential candidate of the Republican Party, Mr Donald Trump has described his main opponent in the scheduled 5th November election as a “radical left lunatic”.
Speaking during his first rally since Harris became the de facto Democratic Party nominee, Trump criticized her stance on abortion.
“She is a radical left lunatic who will destroy our country,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has given a reason why he took the decision to step down from the race.
The 81-year-old, who previously served as vice president under Barack Obama, made history in 2020 as the oldest person elected to the Oval Office, defeating then-incumbent President Donald Trump.
Biden’s presidency has faced numerous controversies, particularly concerning his health and fitness for office. The situation intensified after a recent presidential debate, where Trump defeated him by a wide margin according to exit polls.
Despite consistent pressure to step down, Biden announced his decision to withdraw in a post on his X handle on Sunday. In a televised address on Wednesday night, he explained his decision was made to protect US democracy. He endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, as the Democratic nominee to unite the party and the country.
“I revere this office. But I love my country more. I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation,” Biden said. “That is the best way to unite our nation.”
Biden emphasized that while he believed his record justified a second term, “nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition.”
He added, “The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands.”
Biden’s decision marks the first time a sitting president has chosen not to seek re-election since 1968 when Lyndon Johnson stepped down amid declining popularity during the Vietnam War.
Opinion polls indicate a tight race between Harris and Trump in a hypothetical match-up.
