A criminal suspect, thrice arraigned in court by the Kano State Police Command for serial car snatching, has again been arrested.

The suspect, Saminu Mohammed, who hails from Daura Local Government Area in Katsina State, was arrested on 11 October 2023, while escaping with his gang members on the Hausa Road, Sabon Gari Quarters in Kano.

The gang was transiting in two suspected stolen Toyota cars; an ash colour Rav-4, marked BNK 305 DT and an unregistered Toyota Corolla, and was intercepted by a surveillance patrol team attached to the anti-car theft section of the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Disclosing this in a press statement, the Kano State Police spokesman (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said that the team was on intelligence-led operation on the road when, at about 3:40 am, it intercepted the two cars.

According to the PPRO, when questioned, the two suspects could not give satisfactory accounts of the vehicles, instead zoomed off and tried to escape, during which Saminu Mohammed “was pursued and arrested, while the other suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran away”.

He said the two vehicles were recovered, even as the owners had identified them, adding that investigation was in progress.

In a similar vein, according to the PPRO, on 7 October at about 3:00 am, a team of surveillance patrol team attached to the Eastern Bypass Area Command, while on round-the-clock visibility patrol at Panshekara Quarters, Kano, intercepted a blue Toyota Corolla car with Reg No. SMK 908 HX.

In the car were three male occupants, Abubakar Aminu, 21, of Brigade Quarters, Kano; Ayuba Umar, 30, of Gwarinfa and Auwalu Shuaibu, 30, also of Gwarinfa, Abuja, on reasonable suspicion.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to having stolen the car in Abuja.

The PPRO further disclosed that the car was recovered with its original documents and that the owner, who had been identified and traced, narrated how he was dispossessed of the car at gunpoint in Abuja.

He added that on completion of investigation, the suspect would be charged in court

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, appreciated the people of the state for their understanding, cooperation and support, while reiterating the command’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all inhabitants.

He also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to taming all sorts of car theft in the state and urged the inhabitants to keep reporting any suspicious movement, person(s) or item(s) they come across to the nearest Police station.

In the alternative, CP dolled out the Kano State Police Command emergency contact numbers as 08032419754, 08123821575, 09029292926.
