KENYAN police have apprehended a suspected serial killer, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who has confessed to murdering 42 women, including his wife, and dumping their dismembered bodies in a rubbish tip in Nairobi’s Mukuru slum area.
So far, nine mutilated bodies, contained in plastic bags, have been recovered from the site.
Acting Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja stated that the 33-year-old suspect was arrested near a Nairobi bar at around 3:00 am (0000 GMT) on Monday, 15 July. Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), described Khalusha as a “psychopathic serial killer” and a “vampire” with no respect for human life.
Khalusha admitted to committing the murders between 2022 and 11 July 2024, claiming his first victim was his wife, whom he strangled, dismembered, and disposed of at the same dump site. The suspect was tracked down through the analysis of one of the victim’s mobile phones, in a joint operation by the DCI and the National Police Service.
At the time of his arrest, Khalusha was reportedly in the process of luring another victim.
In Khalusha’s one-room house, located just 100 meters from the crime scene, police found a machete, nylon sacks, rope, industrial rubber gloves, a pink female handbag, and two female panties. The areas surrounding the crime scenes will remain under investigation.
Amin mentioned that nine bodies have been retrieved so far, with eight confirmed to be female. Autopsies are scheduled to be conducted on Monday. Additionally, a second suspect, found with a phone belonging to one of the victims, has also been arrested.
Kenya’s Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating potential police involvement in the case, considering the proximity of the dumpsite to a police station and whether there was a failure to prevent the killings.
