THE Lagos State Truck and Cargo Operators Committee has been inaugurated by the state government to oversee the affairs of truck operators in the state.
The Committee, which is headed by Alhaji Lukman Shittu Shagalo, would liaise with the government in implementing policies and programmes aimed at easing the hardship faced by truck drivers and maritime workers in the state.
In a message to the inauguration, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi said that the Committee was formed to address challenges facing maritime business and to put an end to the activities of hoodlums known as ‘Area Boys’ who imposed multiple tickets and charges on truck drivers in the Apapa axis.
Mr. Osinyemi, who was represented by the Deputy Director in the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Tiamiyu Oluwatosin called on truck drivers and other road users to obey all the traffic rules and regulations that guide truck movement into the ports in Lagos.
In an acceptance speech, the new Chairman of Lagos State Truck and Cargo Operators Committee, Alhaji Lukman Shittu Shagalo commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for counting him worthy for the position and pledged to work with relevant stakeholders in minimizing the suffering faced by truck drivers and cargo operators in Lagos especially the traffic management in Apapa axis.
In a remark, the Grand Patron of The Lagos State Truck and Cargo Operators Committee, Chief Remi Ogungbemi, who hailed the Lagos State government and Ministry of Transportation, said that this inauguration of the committee was a call to serve which required responsibilities that would ease the suffering of truck drivers while doing their business in the maritime area.
The event provided an opportunity for stakeholders in the transport sector to call on relevant transport bodies to come to their aid in finding lasting solutions to issues of hoodlums who extort drivers and traffic gridlock in the maritime environment.
