…Says Party Would Use Anambra Gov’ship Election To Test Victory In 2027
THE National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Barrister Julius Abure, has criticized the party’s federal lawmakers for failing to make any financial contributions since their election in 2023. This is even as he said the party would use the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, to test its expected victory in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a town hall meeting organised by the Lagos chapter of the party on Friday, Abure also warned against the creation of parallel structures within the LP, emphasizing that the party must operate under a single, unified structure.
“It is a fact that they don’t respect the party, it is a fact that they don’t make contributions to the party,” Abure stated in a statement released by LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.
“As I speak with you today, we have not received one kobo at the national level from those we elected to the National Assembly. The responsibility of running this party is still with the leadership of the party. As of today, we have six senators, about 30 House of Representatives members, and numerous state House of Assembly members.
“But it will shock you to know that none of these lawmakers have contributed a dime to the party since their election in 2023. Let them go and ask other parties—it is those elected under their platform that fund the party.
“Today, most of them want to have control over their local government and for us to hand over their constituencies to them, yet they are not ready to work or partner with the party. Is it fair?”
Abure also urged members of the ‘Obidient’ movement, which emerged in support of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, to officially register as members of the Labour Party.
At another forum the following day, Saturday, Mr Abure said that the party would use the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, which comes up in November this year, to test their expected victory in the 2027 presidential election.
Abure stated this in Awka, Anambra State capital on Saturday, during a forum organised by an organ of the party, Directorate of Mobilization and Integration (DMI), for aspirants of the party to meet with their delegates, ahead of the primary election which comes up on Saturday.
Abure, according to Obiora Ifoh, was represented by the National Women Leader of the party, Mrs Dudu Manuga said: “We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be. The Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase, we are in all the states of Nigeria and Abuja and we are getting ready not just for Anambra but for 2027.
“After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We will all join hands to emerge in the main election in November. Let us not be weak, let us not biker, let us all stand strong, be united and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve.
“This forum is to bring the aspirants together and make them integrate with the people they want to govern. We will plant LP in every polling unit. What is happening today in Anambra is crucial for our victory in 2027.”
Aspirants of the party; Dr George Moghalu and Mr John Nwosu attended the forum and also spoke to members of the party on their manifesto.
Moghalu, in his speech, insisted that the major problem of Anambra was that the people had lost confidence in the government.
“People no longer trust the government, security has collapsed, thugs are used to enforce tax. If the government is doing the right thing, people will pay tax without being chased about, tax can also be collected electronically.”
Moghalu also pledged to rebuild Anambra State and bring the government closer to the electorate.
