A Federal High Court sitting in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has ordered the remand of a 50-year-old man in a correctional facility for impersonating the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The defendant, Ibrahim Shu’aibu, was arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako but pleaded not guilty to the nine-count charge preferred against him.
The presiding judge, however, granted him bail and ordered that he be remanded in a correctional facility pending the fulfilment of his bail condition, and adjourned the case to Wednesday, 3 July 2024.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) had on Monday, 29 January 2024, addressed the media on the defendant’s arrest by the Service’s Police Unit for numerous fraudulent activities, which included obtaining from unsuspecting citizens under the pretence of issuing them with job appointment letters.
According to a press statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer (NPRO) of the Nigeria Customs Service, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, Shu’aibu was arrested “for assuming the character of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, among other distinguished personalities in Nigeria, to commit fraudulent activities”.
