THE mastermind of a fake but widely circulated news of a slash in Dangote’s Cement price has been arrested.
28-year-old Benjamin Ezeukwe was arrested in the Rumuolumeni area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, following weeks of intensive investigation by officers of Area ‘A’ Command of the State Command.
Disclosing this in a press statement, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin said the suspect who was arrested on 19 October 2023, had through that means, allegedly swindled several unsuspecting Nigerians of their hard-earned money.
Found in his possession, according to the statement, were two handsets: one Tecno and one iPhone; three SIM cards, including that of 08039691980 which he used for the scam.
Also recovered from him was a Toyota Avalon car, which investigation revealed to have been purchased with the proceeds from the criminal act.
It would be recalled that the suspect had in September 2023 created a bogus online advert, purporting a massive slash in the price of Dangote Cement, which the management came out to refute.
Hundeyin stated that “Numerous unsuspecting customers fell prey to the scam, losing millions of Naira to the suspect”, in the said “elaborate cement-price-slash scam”.
The PPRO, however, said that the suspect has since been arraigned, adding that, “Investigation has so far revealed that the suspect had perpetrated several other similar scams”.
