MANCHESTER City and Spain midfielder Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, according to reports in Spain on Monday.
The 28-year-old limped off during City’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday after going down holding his right knee.
The injury was confirmed following tests on Monday morning, revealing damage to Rodri’s right knee.
The Spaniard, who had only played 21 minutes in his first start of the season, was injured following two hard tackles by Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Thomas Partey.
Rodri, a Ballon d’Or contender, is expected to undergo surgery in Barcelona, according to ESPN reports.
This marks the longest injury layoff in Rodri’s career, as the midfielder has only missed eight matches throughout his time with both club and country.
The draw between Manchester City and Arsenal marked the first time the Premier League champions dropped points this season, though they remained at the top of the table with 13 points. Arsenal, who are still unbeaten, sit in 4th place with 11 points.
