A 45-year-old man, simply identified as Kazeem on 11th October 2024 committed suicide by taking a plunge into the Odo Tente River, located at the boundary between Lagos and Ogun states.
Sources say that Kazeem decided to take his life after consuming a hard drug known as Colorado.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the details in a statement on Sunday.
Kazeem began exhibiting strange behaviour shortly before taking the plunge.
Despite efforts to save him, Kazeem reportedly drowned in the river. Detectives from the Alagbado Police Division, on arrival at the scene, documented their findings and took photographs for further investigation.
In accordance with local traditions as well as Kazeem’s father’s position, who was contacted shortly after the incident, Kazeem’s remains were buried by the riverside.
A neighbour who craved anonymity said the deceased, popularly known as ‘Kaso’, was drunk. He said due to his drunkenness and violent disposition, his wife left him and returned to her parents.
“He suffered a serious hernia attack some few years back, it was our CDA members that contributed some money to get him treated since he couldn’t afford the cost of surgery. After his recovery, we summoned him to our meeting and warned him to stop drinking alcohol and smoking weed, as well as to reconcile with his wife. All these he jettisoned because he went back to drinking and smoking after the operation. The result is what happened to him. May God rest his soul”.
Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation to uncover details surrounding the tragic event and to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly the increasing use of hard substances like Colorado.
