MELINDA French Gates has announced her resignation as co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This comes three years after her divorce from Microsoft founder Bill Gates, after twenty-seven years of marriage.
The Chief Executive Officer and Board member of the foundation, Mark Suzman had on 7 June 2021, announced that Melinda would resign as co-chair and trustee of the foundation if after two years either of the two concluded that they could not work together as co-chairs.
Suzman noted that for over twenty years, Bill and Melinda have nurtured the foundation’s growth, often referring to it as their “fourth child.”
In a statement shared on her X handle, Melinda revealed that stepping down from the foundation would allow her to allocate an additional twelve point five billion dollars to her philanthropic endeavours.
Melinda Gates stated that her final day at the foundation will be 7 June 2024.
