A final-year student in the Department of English at Ebonyi State University has reportedly taken her life after repeatedly failing a course; this is even as her mother blames a lecturer.
Favour Ugwuka was found dead on the night of Wednesday 22 May 2024 behind her hostel at the Ishieke Campus of the university in Abakaliki after allegedly taking a poisonous substance suspected to be sniper.
Favour reportedly passed all her courses but repeatedly failed a particular course, whose lecturer had allegedly vowed she would never pass.
A viral video shows the deceased mother lamenting and blaming a lecturer for making her daughter commit suicide.
“Dr Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide,” Favour’s mother was heard saying in the video.
A graduate of the institution who identified himself as Rex Nwome claimed that the girl committed suicide because she had been failing the particular course repeatedly.
Meanwhile, the accused lecturer, Prof. Amechi Enyi has denied any involvement in her death.
Professor Enyi, who claimed he was threatened by the deceased mother severally before the incident, said the Question Paper to the last examination of the course (English Statistics), revealed the late student merely copied down three questions.
He stated this while answering questions from journalists, on Friday, in Abakaliki, saying it was incorrect to say her death was related to academic activities.

Recall a woman who identified herself as the mother of the deceased student was seen in a trend blaming the lecturer for her daughter’s death.
