THE National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it is currently investigating a case involving suspected substandard Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg Capsules with Lot Number 4C639001.
According to the agency in a statement signed by its Director-General/CEO, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, this product, manufactured by Ecomed Pharma Ltd and marketed by Devine Kings Pharmaceutical Ltd, has been linked to reports of serious adverse drug reactions from patients across the country.
Preliminary findings by the agency reveal discrepancies in the manufacturer’s claims. Ecomed Pharma Ltd stated it produced only 20 packets of Lot 4C639001 for registration renewal purposes, alongside 1,961 packets of a different batch (Lot 4C639002). However, an alarming 790 packs of Lot 4C639001 bearing a manufacturing date of 03/2024 and expiry date of 02/2027, were reportedly recalled, which the manufacturer denies producing.
Suspects in this case, including Pharm. Ekene Christopher of Ecomed Pharma Ltd and Mr Kingsley Ekeanyanwu of Devine Kings Pharmaceutical Ltd are under investigation. Samples of the product have been collected for laboratory analysis, and further inquiries are ongoing with the involvement of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria.
NAFDAC advised members of the public to immediately discontinue the use, sale, or distribution of Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg Capsules from the affected lot. Distributors, healthcare providers, and patients are urged to remain vigilant, source products from authorised suppliers, and carefully inspect medicines for authenticity and integrity.
