ERIC Chelle, the new Super Eagles Coach will go home with Fifty Thousand Dollars ($50,000.00) a month, an amount which is way less than what he currently earns at Algerian side MC Oran.
It was also gathered that the new coach will sign a short-term contract to cover the games of the World Cup qualifiers which will round up in October.
He will bring two of his assistants, who will be paid $5,000 a month. The Nigerian duo of Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu will also be a part of his technical crew, and he will also double as their boss for the CHAN Championship which will be prosecuted by players playing in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Tuesday night confirmed the appointment of the former coach of Mali as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria.
Nigeria have been without a substantive coach since the short term of Finidi George, which lasted just a month with interim coach Austine Eguavoen guiding them successfully through the qualifiers for the AFCON.
Eguavoen will now return to his role as the technical director of the football house with Chelle taking his spot as the coach of the team for the World Cup qualifiers, which resumes in March.
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles defender, Sam Elijah has said Eric Chelle is in no way better than the interim coach and the Technical Director of the NFF who recently qualified the team for the AFCON tournament which takes place later in the year.
According to Sam Elijah, “I don’t think this is the right appointment. We have a local coach (Austin Eguavoen) who has done well in our past matches.”
“He came, and he redeemed the team. Now, they have been canvassing for a foreign coach all this while.”
“I don’t know what the NFF is looking for. For me bringing Eric Chelle to take over the national team is a slap on our football.”
“Who is Eric Chelle compared to Austin Eguavoen, in any way? Look at the playing career, look at the two of them playing for their various national teams.”
“How many caps does he have, what was his achievement the last time he took the national team to Côte d’Ivoire, he couldn’t get to the final.”
“Eric Chelle is not the right appointment, he is not the right person for us. So we should stick to our local coaches. Austin Eguavoen has the pedigree, he has what it takes, the boys trust him, and they have confidence in him. So when he came in, the boys were ready to play for him, and they were doing well.”
