A Nigerian-American woman, Victoria Ogunremi, displayed an exceptional act of honesty and integrity when she returned Five Thousand, Seven Hundred Dollars ($5,700) she found in a restroom at her workplace in New Jersey, USA.
Her gesture has been widely praised by her employer, colleagues, and fellow Nigerians abroad as a remarkable display of integrity.
In a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ogunremi revealed that her decision to return the money was driven by empathy for the person who lost it. “The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me. I did not hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings peace of mind and is the key virtue I cherish,” she explained.
Ogunremi located the money’s owner before notifying her employer’s management. Her act of integrity earned her the admiration of colleagues, who commended her strong moral principles. “The management was very pleased and proud of me. The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praises,” she said.
She attributed her values to the upbringing instilled by her late father, who taught her the importance of honesty. “He taught us never to take what does not belong to us. These principles have guided me throughout my life, and I hope to instil them in my children and grandchildren,” Ogunremi stated.
She encouraged others to embrace honesty, emphasizing that “a good name is priceless, and peace of mind is golden. No matter how tough your situation is, always return what does not belong to you. Doing the right thing brings rewards far greater than anything material.”
Ogunremi’s exemplary act serves as a powerful reminder of the value of integrity and compassion, even when faced with temptation.
