WHO did it? This is the question on the lip of the Nigerian community in the Middle East country of Jordan as a Nigerian medical doctor based in the Islamic country, Emeka Agbo, was reportedly murdered under suspicious circumstances, leaving his family and colleagues devastated.
According to a report, Dr Agbo, who was also a Polio Technical Officer working with the World Health Organization (WHO), was found dẹ̀ad in Amman.
A microblog user – X, Dolapo Aina, who disclosed the loss, noted that Dr. Agbo had reportedly told his wife about the thrèats he was receiving from two expatriate doctors with whom he worked.
Dr. Agbo was a dedicated and brilliant medical professional, committed to the fight against polio in the region.
His contributions to public health, particularly in his work with WHO Jordan, were widely respected and admired. His sudden and violent dẹ̀ath has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for a thorough investigation.
The World Health Organisation has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, but there are growing calls for the organisation to collaborate with Jordanian authorities to ensure a comprehensive investigation is conducted.
Meanwhile, the wider Nigerian community are seeking justice and clarification on the circumstances that led to his tragic death.
In her reaction, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa through X social media platform, described the loss as “sad”. “This is indeed a very sad incident.”
She noted that while investigations are ongoing, NiDCOM has contacted the family of the decẹ̄ased to ensure their well-being and safety.
“@nidcom_gov has been in touch with the family,” she stated. “The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been brought to the matter. And it will be thoroughly looked into,” she added.
