THE National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointment as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The NJC made the recommendation at its 106th meeting held on 14 and 15 August 2024 and presided over by the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Oyo State-born Ariwoola will formally leave office on Thursday, 22 August 2024.
The Council also recommended 27 candidates for appointment as judges of state High Courts and a candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia
Court of the FCT, Abuja to their various governors and the president.
When sworn in, Lagos State-born Kekere-Ekun will be the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history.
Recall that on 16 July 2012, Aloma Mukhtar was sworn in as the first woman CJN by the then-serving President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who conferred on her the National Honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger.
