PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State, describing the move as a decisive step toward addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu highlighted the significance of the new institution in advancing environmental justice, education, and sustainable development.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development. Ogoni has been at the forefront of our development and agitation and has suffered environmental degradation. It is only fitting that we bring knowledge into that environment”, he said.
The President emphasized that the establishment of the university goes beyond academia, serving as a reaffirmation of his administration’s unwavering commitment to the people of Ogoni, the Niger Delta, and the nation as a whole.
“For decades, the Ogoni people have been at the forefront of the fight for environmental restoration and sustainable development, shaping both national and global conversations on these critical issues.
“By signing this bill into law, we are taking a decisive step towards addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity”, Tinubu noted.
The President described the university as a centre of excellence that will equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle contemporary environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions, and contribute to national economic sustainability.
