JUSTICE O. Ogunfowora of an Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta, the state capital has sentenced 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo to death by hanging for killing one Asisat Akande, an alleged sex worker, in July 2021.
Malomo, who was 18 at the time of the incident, was convicted on a one-count charge of murder.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, 22 January 2025 Justice Ogunfowora held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the 22-year-old was guilty as charged.
Justice Ogunfowora held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and therefore sentenced Malomo to death by hanging.
During the trial, the state prosecuting counsel, Mr A.M. Adebayo, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, informed the court that the offence occurred on 18 July 2021, around 9:30 pm in the Ori-Apata community of Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta.
Adebayo explained that the convict had taken Asisat Akande from the 3AD Bar in the Panseke area to his residence for sexual activity.
“After having carnal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded N10,000 which was their agreement but Malomo refused to give her the complete money saying he had N8,000.
“The situation led to an argument between him and the deceased which made the convict bring out a knife from his pocket and stab the deceased on the neck leading to her death,” he said.
He noted that Malomo was arrested by the police at the 3AD club in Panseke where he wanted to pick another girl for sexual pleasure.
Adebayo, however, said that the offence committed “Contravened the provisions of Section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code, laws of Ogun 2006.”
