Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala joined the chorus of Morocco’s admirers who praised it for its historic 2022 World Cup run.
The Nigerian praised the Atlas Lions for their outstanding performance and their remarkable journey to the World Cup semi-finals, emphasizing how well they had represented both the African and Arab countries.
Okonjo-Iweala made the remarks on the sidelines of the organisation’s General Council meeting in Geneva on Monday.
Additionally, members of the General Council of the WTO lauded the Moroccan national team’s historic performance in the global tournament.
Morocco’s permanent Ambassador to Geneva Omar Zniber thanked the Director-General and the Council members for their cordial gesture and emphasized that the Moroccan national team represents various regions on the football world map.
The diplomat also took the opportunity to thank the host country, Qatar, for successfully organising a high-level World Cup and congratulated Argentina on winning the trophy.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has also congratulated Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on the national football team’s historic achievements at the Qatar World Cup, highlighting that the Atlas Lions have made Africa proud.
“Morocco has made the entire continent proud with their dexterity, reviving hope that an African team can indeed win, and should win the ongoing global championship in Qatar,” the president said.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden also praised the Atlas Lions’ historic achievement on Twitter, writing, “It was a great honor to watch today’s (Saturday) World Cup match alongside Prime Minister Akhannouch of Morocco.”
The US president went on to stress: “No matter who you’re rooting for, it was remarkable to watch how much this team has been able to achieve.”
