OLUSOJI Adetokunbo Fasuba became the fastest man in Nigeria and Africa during the Doha Grand Prix in May 2006, after winning the 100m race in a time of 9.85 seconds, beating the 1996 record set by Frankie Fredericks (9.86s).
Two years later, Fasuba became the world indoor champion over 60 metres, he was the first African to hit such an achievement.
After years of flying Nigeria’s flag high, Fasuba decided to join the British Royal Navy in April 2011, quitting his athletics career.
He said: “I left Track and Field for the British Royal Navy because there was no future for me in athletics in Nigeria. I decided to take my bow at that early age to start a new life (in the British Navy) for myself and my family because I was tired of always asking for money that was not coming especially when I was injured on more than one occasion for the country (Nigeria).
“I knew Nigeria had no plan for me and the best option was what I did to have a secured future for me and my young family.
