HOPE of Team Nigeria winning a medal through the sport of wrestling at the ongoing Olympic Games is gradually fading away as another fighter has lost out.
Three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Odunayo Adekuoroye lost her quarter-finals in women’s 57kg wrestling at the ongoing Olympics in Paris, France, on Thursday.
Odunayo Adekuoroye, the Ondo State-born wrestler, had won her second-round fight against Algeria’s Fouzia Aouissi by a VIN (Victory by Injury) and was looking imperial in a match against China’s Kexin Hong, leading 4-0 at some point in the contest.
However, Kexin Hong fought back ferociously by scoring 8 points in quick succession and eventually won the fight 10-8.
However, if Kexin Hong, the Chinese fighter makes it to the final, then Adekuoroye will have another opportunity to fight for the bronze medal via repechage.
Tokyo Olympics Games silver medallist in the 68kg freestyle, Blessing Okorodudu was the first Nigerian wrestler to fight and leave the Paris Games without a medal to her name.
