ERSTWHILE senior pastor of the City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Idowu Iluyomade has resigned from the church
It will be recalled that Iluyomades drew the ire of some members after Mrs Siju, wife of the pastor held a glamorous 60th birthday celebration barely a week after the death of Herbert Wigwe, then Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holding Plc, his wife, Chizoba; son, Chizi and a business partner in a helicopter crash in the United States of America. Mr Wigwe was a strong member of the church before the unfortunate incident.
Pastor Idowu was last weekend replaced by Pastor Charles Kpendei and directed by the church governing council to step down and report to the headquarters of the church in Ebutta Metta for three months pending investigation of the allegations against him.
“It was not Pastor (Enoch) Adeboye that suspended him. The governing council decided to suspend him. I think it’s a decision in the right direction. Though some believe it is coming late. They needed to investigate some of the things people were saying against him and the church,” a top pastor in the church was quoted as saying.
The transfer however didn’t go down well with the illuyomades who were conspicuously absent during church service last Sunday when his transfer was announced, hence his decision to pull out of the RCCG family.
A reliable source disclosed that the cleric turned in his resignation letter on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
Pastor Illuyomade’s travails may not be unconnected with the alleged obscene and lavish 60th birthday of his wife held at Eko Hotel despite the sudden death of the Wigwes
After the party, social media was awash with the extravagance on display at the event. The Iluyomades were accused of insensitivity to the mood of the country, particularly the Wigwes
Many leaders and members of the church also considered it insensitive as netizens argued that the church ought to have set aside some days to mourn Wigwes considering the fact that the family was a strong financier of the church.
The act allegedly informed the decision of the Wigwes to distance themselves from the church and refused to involve it in the activities of the burial of their illustrious children.
