THE main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has denied reports suggesting that some of its members are backing a potential 2027 presidential ticket featuring former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Forum’s Director-General, Emmanuel Agbo, the governors elected on the platform of the main opposition party led by Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting any candidate who secures the party’s nomination.
The clarification follows reports which claimed that five PDP governors were in favour of an El-Rufai-Obi ticket.
The PDP Governors’ Forum strongly refuted these claims, describing them as misleading and provocative.
Dismissing the speculation, the Forum stated, “It is incumbent on the PDP Governors’ Forum through its leadership anchored by the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, to openly denounce and in very strong terms, the unpleasant and provoking publications and rumours being peddled by negative forces and their agents who cannot absorb the temerity of this Forum to question their incapacities in leadership…”
The statement further criticised attempts to create divisions within the party, alleging that certain elements were working to weaken the opposition and undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Reaffirming the party’s unity and commitment to governance, the Forum declared, “The PDP Governors’ Forum does not align with these actors, neither does it enjoy any ambience of political space to discuss nor seal the auction of the PDP through lowlife grifters who are allegedly working behind the scenes to support a potential Nasir El-Rufai-Peter Obi presidential ticket in the 2027 election.”
The governors emphasized their dedication to addressing economic challenges, despite pressures from the ruling APC, and dismissed attempts to discredit their efforts.
