The CAF Champions League first leg second round game between Nigeria’s standard-bearer Plateau United Football Club of Jos and Esperance of Tunisia has been fixed for Sunday the 9th of October, 2022.
This piece of information was pushed out on Thursday by the Media Officer of the club, Albert Dakup.
Albert Dakup stated that the club has been playing its home matches on Sundays, the same day as continental matches.
He noted that the date of Saturday, 8th October being peddled around on social and conventional media is not the official date as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has indeed confirmed Sunday, 9th October 2022 as the date for the first leg while the second leg will take place on Friday 14th October 2022 at the Stade Olympique de Rades in Tunisia.
“In 2018 and 2020 when we flew Nigeria’s flag in the CAF Champions League, we played all our home matches on Sundays, except the encounter against USM of Algeria which we played on Saturday at the Agege Stadium in Lagos in 2018”, he pointed out.
The Jos-based club appealed to the members of the public and the club’s loyal fans to disregard Saturday’s date making the rounds on social and conventional media and come out en mass to support the team to victory come Sunday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
To reach this stage of the CAF Champions League Plateau United Football Club stopped the Association Sportive Mandji of Gabon 3-2 on aggregate in the first round of the competition.
If United overcome Esperance at this stage, they will land in the lucrative money-spinning group stage of the competition.
Rivers United are the other representative of Nigeria in the CAF Champions League and the country’s touch bearers last year did not reach the group stage.
