THE Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that Biola Adams-Odutayo, the driver accused of causing the death of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay), has been arraigned in court.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with growing demands for justice amid allegations of negligence and a possible cover-up.
Teejay, a 32-year-old software engineer and co-founder of Bumpa, died in a road accident on 4 March along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Reports indicate he was riding his power bike when Adams-Odutayo’s vehicle allegedly struck him after she entered the expressway without checking for oncoming traffic.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, in a statement on Saturday, said, “We, Lagos State Police, acknowledge public concerns regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay) on 4 March 2025. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who have been affected by this loss,” the police stated.
“We can confirm that following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo ‘f’ was arraigned in Court 1, Tinubu on 12 March 2025, after she was discharged from the hospital, for driving on a ‘public highway recklessly and carelessly without due care and attention to other road users and caus[ing] the death of one Tunji Opayele ‘m’ aged 32 and thereby committed an offence.”
“The court granted her bail and adjourned the case till 16 April 2025,” the statement added.
However, Teejay’s family, friends, and supporters remain dissatisfied with the legal proceedings.
A petition on Change.org alleges that Adams-Odutayo refused to check on Teejay after the accident, choosing to stay on a phone call for over 30 minutes while bystanders struggled to get him medical attention.
The petition further stated that multiple hospitals refused to admit Teejay, delaying critical care.
Witnesses also alleged that Adams-Odutayo initially attempted to flee the scene and only remained because bystanders physically prevented her from leaving.
Public pressure continues to mount, with demands that authorities upgrade the charges to include manslaughter and ensure Adams-Odutayo remains in Nigeria to face trial.
Supporters are also calling for intervention from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to prevent any alleged attempts to influence the case.
The Lagos State Police Command has however assured the public that it is committed to ensuring transparency, fairness, and justice in the matter.
