THE Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele, on Wednesday escaped an attack by the representatives of student bodies during a protest in Abeokuta, the state capital.
According to a release signed by Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the deputy governor’s convoy was on its way to 35 Artillery Brigade Alabama, Abeokuta, Ogun State to represent the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the reception marking the year 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations when her convoy met the protesting students.
The protesting irate students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) were reportedly armed with sticks and other dangerous projectiles. All efforts to placate the students and allow the convoy to pass proved abortive as immediately the students realised it was the deputy governor, they became even more restive and rushed to attack her convoy with the aim of demobilising it, despite her security operatives as well as other police officers on grounds.
This informed her convoy’s decision to make an immediate detour to her lodge for the protesting students to pass peacefully before she left for the function she was slated to attend.
The statement also revealed that some of the deputy governor’s security vehicles were damaged, and security operatives were injured during the incident.
“Noteworthy is that there was obstruction of vehicular movement, while some of her security vehicle was damaged and her security operatives were also hurt in the process of maintaining law and order contrary to the news making rounds in the press,” the press statement added.
Eighteen-Eleven Media reports that the students are protesting an alleged increment in their tuition fees and a delay in the mobilisation of their Higher National Diploma students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The management said it ordered the closure of the school to ensure the safety of lives and properties.
According to the Head, Public Relations and Protocol, ‘Yemi Ajibola, this is to ensure the safety of lives and properties owing to the protest by some students on the decision of the Management to verify their National Diploma results from their former schools.
“Management expressed its zero tolerance to fake results from any quarters.
“Consequently, students were advised to stay away from the campus in their own interests.
“Parents and the general public were assured of timely updates as events unfold”.
