FOLLOWING recent reports of cholera outbreaks in some local government areas of Rivers State, the Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development has initiated a robust response to curb the spread of the epidemic.
The ministry’s strategy includes enlightenment programmes and advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting behavioural change among rural communities in affected areas.
Additionally, to intensify these efforts, the ministry says it will launch the WASH Clinic initiative, a comprehensive programme slated to roll out across all local government areas of the state.
The state Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Prince Samuel Eyiba, who made this known in a statement, said the ministry will partner with key agencies, including; the state Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), local government areas’ Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) units to prevent further spread of the disease.
Prince Samuel Eyiba further stated that the ministry plans to rehabilitate water facilities in rural communities, ensuring access to adequate, potable, and safe drinking water.
He noted that the prompt response by the ministry demonstrates the Rivers State government’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its citizens.
