SEVERAL protesters have been arrested in Ghana during a demonstration in the capital Accra, according to local reports.
Several journalists, who were covering the protest, were reportedly manhandled and arrested.
The anti-government demonstrators travelled to Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, for the #OccupyJulorBiHouse gathering on Thursday – Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day honouring Ghana’s first president.
The organisers had notified the police ahead of the protest and refused to call it off when the police ordered them not to go ahead. The group organising the protest, Democracy Hub, said it had not been served any legal process to suspend the protest even though the Ghana Police Service made last-minute legal attempts to scupper the protest.
The group criticised “partisan attempts by the Police” to disrupt the protest. It further urged the public to convene at the 37 Trotro Station for the demonstration.
The protesters are calling on the president and members of Ghana’s Economic Management Team to #FixTheCountry amid alleged economic mismanagement and corruption.
The picketing also allowed citizens to express their opposition to the proposed military intervention in Niger as well as any other government policy decisions or initiatives,
