A federal government delegation and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are currently engaged in a closed-door meeting to address ongoing issues and prevent a potential strike.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the meeting began on Thursday at around 4:30 p.m. in the office of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.
The federal government team includes the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, and other senior officials from the ministry.
ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke, who is leading the union’s delegation, informed journalists that the meeting aims to resolve the persistent issues affecting universities and to prevent the planned strike action.
“There are many unresolved issues within the system that we expected to be addressed by now,”
Osodeke said. “These issues were supposed to be resolved in line with promises made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which would prevent any strike in the university system. We hope this meeting will help us move forward as a country and improve our university system.”
Prof. Tahir Mamman stated that the meeting is an opportunity for both parties to discuss the concerns affecting the university system.
He noted that ASUU had previously communicated several issues to the ministry, which necessitated this interaction to prevent a proposed strike.
As of the time of this report, the meeting is still in progress. ASUU had threatened a nationwide strike if the federal government failed to address its demands within two weeks.
