AL Merrikh SC, the Sudanese club Olorunleke Ojo erstwhile signed for have now officially announced the termination of his contract, just six months into a two-year deal.
Olorunleke moved to Sudan last year from Enyimba FC, Nigeria’s most successful football club.
Al Merrikh SC made this shocking announcement via social media, stating, “Mars ends goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke’s contract with a compromise and wishes the player success in his football career.”
This announcement stunned football followers, mostly Nigerian football fans and followers of the Nigerian Premier Football League, (NPFL), especially because it was a move celebrated by the goalkeeper and his teammates.
Olorunleke had joined Al Merrikh a year after helping Enyimba secure their historic ninth NPFL title, a record for any Nigerian club, under coach Finidi George.
Olorunleke, kept 11 clean sheets for Enyimba last season before ditching the NPFL for Sudan.
It is now left to be seen if he will get called up as the third-choice goalkeeper when Eric Chelle brings up his list for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers in March.
