EX-international Augustine Eguavoen has taken over the position of coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, albeit in an interim capacity, following the exit of Portuguese tactician Jose Jose Peseiro.
Peseiro, earlier today, confirmed his exit as head coach of the team. The Portuguese led the Eagles to a second-place finish at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He wrote on X today: “We are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you.”
Meanwhile, Mr Eguavoen will now preside over the affairs of the team pending the appointment of a substantive coach. According to an official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Eguavoen will be assisted by Finidi George who has actually worked with Peseiro for an impressive 22 months.
Eighteen-Eleven Media reports that Mr Eguavoen was in charge of the team in the penultimate edition of AFCON held in Cameron where the team crashed out at the round of 16. He also failed to qualify the team for the late edition of the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.
