Nigeria Super Eagles beat their Group A opponent for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers (AFCON) 2023 to be held in Ivory Coast.

This is the Eagles’ first win in five matches since the embarrassing loss at AFCON 2021 which took place in Cameroon and the failure to beat Ghana to qualify for the Qatar World cup.

Leone Stars played Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja Thursday evening

An 11th-minute goal by Jonathan Morsay put Sierra Leone ahead but Alex Iwobi’s solo shot from the left wing helped Nigeria equalise at the16th minute.

In the 40th-minute striker, Victor Osimhen’s header put Nigeria in front.

The victory undoubtedly reduced pressure on the Super Eagles and the team’s new coach Jose Peserio – being his first win since he took over the role from former coach Augustine Eguavoen.

Sao Tome and Principe as well as Guinea-Bissau are the other teams in the group.

Only two of the four teams will qualify for AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast.
