THE Super Falcons of Nigeria booked a place in the knockout rounds of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, after playing out a goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland in Brisbane, Australia earlier today (Monday, 31st July 2023).
The Irish enjoyed large spells of possession and had a fine opportunity in the early stages, as skipper Katie McCabe’s shot flashed wide of keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie’s goal.
The West African giants soon had a great chance to go in front. An errant pass from the Irish defence was intercepted by Uchenna Kanu, who then teed up Asisat Oshoala. The FC Barcelona striker fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
The only effort on target came through Caruso late in the first half but her header was easily gathered by Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The second half saw the Nigerians keep the ball more often and could have gone in front in the 52nd minute. Toni Payne’s cross was met with a strong header by Uchenna Kanu, which the Australian goalkeeper did well by saving the effort onto the crossbar.
A minute later, the Super Falcons had another fine chance but Asisat Oshoala dragged her shot wide.
That mattered little in the end as Nigeria qualified for the Round-Of-16, finishing the group in second position with five points.
Co-host Australia sealed the top spot following their win against current Olympic champions Canada.
