A company based in Sweden, Candela, has developed the world’s first electric hydrofoil passenger ferry.
This technology allows the boat to hover just above the surface of the water, thus reducing energy consumption by 80 per cent.
The ferry is expected to be put into service in Stockholm in the near future. Waterborne transport in Stockholm furthermore is used by 1.5 million passengers every year (the population of the larger Stockholm area is almost 2 million).
Stockholm, which is the capital and largest city of Sweden, is just like Lagos, a coastal city located on a mix of islands and the mainland.
Stockholm has for decades included waterborne urban public transport for its residents and visitors. With its archipelago and many small islands, waterborne passenger transport is not only a necessity in many places to guarantee access, but it is also a quick and often more time-efficient complement to other means of transport.
Sweden is world-leading when it comes to making shipping more energy-efficient. This is a crucial step to reduce global emissions. By investing in research and innovation, Sweden is paving the way for sustainable transport solutions.
