PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a former chairman of CitiBank, Olayemi Cardoso, as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and four others as deputies, to pilot the country’s economy towards addressing the concerns of Nigerians.
According to a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the appointment confirms with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which vests in the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the authority to appoint the Governor and Four (4) Deputy Governors for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The four deputies nominated by the president to work with Cardoso, according to Chief Ngelale, are Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor and Dr. Bala M. Bello, and they were expected to serve for five years at the first instance which would be determined by the National Assembly’s confirmation.
After their confirmation, Cardoso and the four deputies would be expected to successfully implement critical reforms that would enhance Nigerians’ confidence in the economy through the CBN.
The new team would also be expected to introduce strategic policies that would encourage international partners to stay and invest in any part of the country.
Aside from that, they would drive the restructuring of the Nigerian economy toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all irrespective of their status.
Chief Ngelale further stated that n line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, the President expects the above-listed nominees to successfully implement critical reforms at the Central Bank of Nigeria, which will enhance the confidence of Nigerians and international partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all.
