AFTER three days of sustained protests by Nigerian youths with attendant but avoidable loss of lives and destruction of properties, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally announced that he would address the nation in a broadcast tomorrow, Sunday, 4 August 2024, at 7:00 am.
The president, in a statement on Saturday by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, said television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to plug into the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast.
The broadcast will be repeated on the network services of the NTA and the FRCN at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the same day.
Eighteen-Eleven Media reports that there have been calls on the President by prominent Nigerians to address the nation . The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate during the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, counsel to the Take It Back Movement, Mr Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa urgeh the President to address the nation, to at least douse tension. The counsel, undoubtedly, did not get the buy of Mr President.
It however remain to be seen if what he would say will be enough to persuade the youths to abandon the scheduled 10-day protests midway.
It will be recalled that the youths declared a 10-day protests to register their displeasure with the parlous state of the economy and President Tinubu’s harsh economic policies.
The protests iwa to terminate on 10th August.
