TWO suspects linked to the murder of a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Justice Azuka, have reportedly escaped from police custody, the state police command confirmed on Tuesday night.
Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the suspects fled while assisting operatives in an investigation to apprehend a receiver of stolen vehicles used by the criminal gang. Although the receiver was arrested and two stolen vehicles recovered, the suspects managed to escape, he stated.
Justice Azuka, a member of the Labour Party, was abducted on 24 December 2024. His decomposing body was later discovered on 6 February 2025 at the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha. Nine suspects were initially arrested in connection with the crime.
Following the escape, Anambra State Police Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has deployed intelligence and operational assets to track down the fugitives. He also ordered immediate disciplinary action against officers involved in the escape.
