Bayana Bayana of South Africa Monday evening, beat Nigeria 2:1 in the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations match at Moulay Hassan Stadium, Morocco.
Jermaine Seoposenwe scored the first goal for South Africa in the 61 minutes, while Hilda Tholakele Magaia made it 2:0 in the 63 minutes.
Super Falcons Rasheedat Ajibade scored for Nigeria in the 90+2 minutes to end the match at 2:1.
Today’s match between Nigeria and South Africa was the opening match in Group C which many people saw as the clash of the titans going by the rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa.
Bayana Bayana went home with the important three points and their focus will be to continue the same way.
With the win Monday night, Bayana Bayana appears to have sent a message of taking over the rulership of the continent’s female football from the Super Falcons following a similar defeat handed down to the Nigerian ladies last year at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, South-West Nigeria. The South African ladies had beaten their Nigerian counterparts 4-2 on that occasion.
Bayana Bayana have played in four WAFCON finals but have not won any of them, and with their defeat of Nigeria, is a clear message that they intend to rewrite history in Morocco.
Super Falcons are the defending champions and have reached nine WAFCON finals and won all of them.
Apart from Nigeria and South Africa, the other Group C clash of the day was a goal-fest. Botswana defeated Burundi to top the group on goal difference.
South Africa is second with Nigeria and Burundi occupying the 3rd and 4th spots.
Nigeria’s next match will be against Burundi on Sunday 10 July, while South Africa plays against Botswana on the same day.
