Former Super Eagles Captain Mikel Obi has attributed the failure of the team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to the unavailability of a single on-field leader in the current squad.
The Super Eagles fell to the Black Stars of Ghana in the World Cup qualification Playoffs in March meaning Nigeria will not be present when 32 national teams battle for glory in Qatar.
According to a report via OwnGoal Mikel Obi blamed the presence of too many leaders on the pitch dishing out instructions for the World Cup miss.
Mikel Obi said “We were motivated and had a direction on the pitch with a leader also and all the 11 players were listening to one man on the pitch and not too many leaders.
We need a leader on the pitch for others to follow because you don’t need five leaders but just one and when you have five leaders, that’s not a unit.”
Mikel Obi retired from international duty after the 2019 AFCON with Ahmed Musa taking over as Captain of the team. Musa has been mostly used as a substitute meaning Assistant Captain Williams Troost-Ekong has led the team out on most occasions.
