Attack On Oyo State Secretariat: Nine Suspected Yoruba Nation Agitators Arrested, Arms, Ammunition Recovered
NINE suspected members of the Yoruba Nation Agitators who launched an unprovoked attack on the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, the state capital, have been arrested.
The suspects said to have dressed in foreign military camouflage with berets and armed with dangerous weapons, were arrested on Saturday, 13 April by the Nigerian Army troops, who reacted promptly to the incident.
In a statement issued by the Director of Army Public Relations, Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu, he said, “Sequel to the report of an attack on the state secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, Oyo State, troops promptly responded to the incident and had contact with adherents of the Yoruba Nation, dressed in foreign military camouflage with berets and armed with dangerous weapons in buses and motorbikes”.
According to the Army spokesman, “Upon encountering own troops, the Yoruba Nation adherents engaged the troops in a shootout. Troops, utilizing superior firepower, successfully subdued the attackers, who subsequently retreated in disarray”.
He further said that, in the course of the engagement, “nine members of the irredentist group were apprehended“, leading to the recovery of a semi-automatic Pump Action rifle and ammunition.
General Nwachukwu said that troops were on the track of the fleeing adherents, adding that the situation was under control.
While assuring members of the public that all necessary measures were being taken to ensure the safety and security of the general area, he urged the public to remain calm and vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate security agencies. 
“The safety and security of the citizenry remain a priority, as we will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and order in the region”, he reiterated.
