The Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State has finally reacted to the arrest of Aminu Adamu, its student, over his controversial tweet on Aisha Buhari.

Aminu, who hails from Azare in Bauchi State, is a final-year student at the Department of Environmental Management.

It had been reported that the student was arrested by the police over a tweet apparently mocking Aisha.

The tweet, which was posted in Hausa in June 2022, reads: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi.”

Aminu’s tweet, accompanied by a photo of Aisha, loosely translates as “Mama has eaten poor people’s money and is now full”.

Abdullahi Bello, the institution’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the student in a statement on Monday.

Bello, however, said the student was not under the varsity’s care when he put out the controversial tweet, adding that the school was not in session then.

“The unfortunate incident involving Aminu Adamu who made a Twitter post happened during the break,” the statement reads.

“He did the posting in his capacity as Aminu Adamu, not as a student of FUD. He was trailed to Dutse where he was arrested.

“The university authorities have spoken to the parent who has already engaged the services of a lawyer to handle the matter and they are hopeful for an amicable resolution soon.”

Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Police Command has said it has no hand in the arrest of a 500-level student.

Shortly after the tweet, Aminu was allegedly arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS), leading to a backlash from Nigerians against the service and the first lady on social media.

Attempts to reach Peter Afunnaya, the DSS spokesperson, proved unsuccessful because neither calls nor messages left on his phone were returned.

DSP Lawan Shiisu, the command’s police public relations officer, claimed to be unaware of the arrest.

“We didn’t make the arrest. An arrest cannot be made in my area without me being informed”, he stated.

One of those who criticised the DSS over Aminu’s reported arrest was a lawyer, Inibehe Effiong.

He tweeted, “You are defending Aisha Buhari because she’s someone’s mother. This argument is preposterous. Thousands have lost their mothers to the incompetence and cruelty of the Buhari regime. Thousands have been orphaned by the corruption in the management of funds meant to combat terrorism.”

Activist Aisha Yesufu said, “Who is Aisha Buhari that an aggrieved citizen cannot talk about? Those of you talking about her so-called powers need to ask yourselves whether you are citizens or slaves.Duniya budurwar wawa!”
