OBVIOUSLY enraged by the report of the unprovoked murder of Auwal Haruna, a Customs Assistant II, by smugglers in Katsina State, the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has vowed to ensure that perpetrators of the evil act did not go unpunished.

The late Haruna, alongside other members of his team, were at their duty post at the Gamji Makaho checkpoint in the Dankama area of Katsina State on 17 April 2024 when the assailants struck and killed him.

However, the CGC, while condollng family and colleagues of the slain officer, said that the Service was in close collaboration with other security agencies, and “tirelessly working to apprehend the perpetrators of this reprehensible act and ensure they face the full consequences of the law”.

He emphasized that intelligence at the disposal of the Service was to the effect that certain unpatriotic community members are harbouring suspected accomplices involved in this heinous crime, and urged such people to be patriotic by aligning with the law and refrain from condoning illegality.

According to him, in a press statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer (NPRO) of Customs, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, “It is in the best interest of our communities and nation to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to root out criminal elements and ensure justice prevails.”

Enraged Adeniyi further stated that, “Violence against our officers is utterly unacceptable, and we will pursue every avenue to bring those responsible to justice. The safety of our personnel and the security of our borders remain paramount”.

And, to forestall a repeat of such an occurrence, the Customs boss said that the Service was committed to working with traditional rulers, government bodies and sister agencies, to put an end to vicious attacks on its personnel.

“The NCS urges members of the public to join hands in the fight against these brazen criminals. We implore members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities of these daredevil smugglers to the nearest Customs formation. Together, we can create a safer environment for our officers and a more secure nation for all”, the statement stressed.

Furthermore, according to the statement, “Under the leadership of CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to combating smuggling and other cross-border crimes. The Service will not falter in its mission to uphold the law and protect the interests of the Nigerian people”.
