PAUL Okoye of square fame (aka Mr P) has pleaded with the Nigerian Police Force to temper justice with mercy over the case of his colleague, Seun Kuti, who was filmed assaulting a policeman.

In the video that emerged on Saturday, Kuti was seen pointing to the unidentified police officer before proceeding to push and slap the officer.

The police, however, have called for the singer’s arrest following the viral video.

Reacting to the development via a tweet on Sunday, Mr P wrote, “Quite an unfortunate incident, and from reports, it seems Seun’s family was in danger hence the altercation.

“When you understand what happens when a man is put in a situation to protect his family from any form of danger, our emotions get the better of us.

“I ask and plead that the #NigerianPoliceForce accept our unreserved apologies for the unfortunate outburst and temper justice with mercy.”

Retweeting Mr P’s post, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, wrote, “Whenever you feel an unarmed lone police officer put your family in danger (God forbids it), go ahead and slap the officer. Do it in Nigeria and the USA which you visit often.

“I’m certain eminent Nigerians will bring up this argument of yours in your defence.”

Eighteen-Eleven Media recalls that in the run-up to 25 February 2023, the duo of Mr P and Seun Kuti engaged in social media beef.

In an interview with a media personality, Seun Okinbaloye, Kuti had described the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as an opportunist. He also said only Nigerians could save Nigeria; not Obi, who is the choice of Mr P.

However, Okoye, who was not comfortable with Kuti’s statement, responded to him on Twitter. He wrote, “Dude just erased his father’s history. You said only the people of Nigeria can save Nigeria. Is Peter Obi and other candidates, not Nigerians? Shame! Shame!! Shame!!!”

Not one to take such things lying low; Seun, son of the late afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, made a series of posts on Instagram, accusing P-Square of campaigning for politicians. He also described Mr P as ‘talentless and a gimmick’.

He wrote, “My father invented afrobeat and you all are on the train. If not for Fela, nobody would know either of you.”

Responding, Mr P wrote, “My late father was a nobody, but today, everyone knows the Okoyes. Dude, try removing ‘Kuti’ from your name; let us know if anyone knows you. Remain in that your local shrine, while people like us and others continue excelling globally. You cannot shame the shameless.”
