Hardship: Residents Invade Abuja Warehouse, Loot Foodstuffs, Others

SOME residents of the Federal Capital Territory Sunday morning raided and plundered a warehouse situated in the Karimo, Phase 3 Region area carting away foodstuffs, doors of the warehouse and roofing sheets.

Some residents of the area confirmed that the looting of grains began around 7:00 am and continued till 9:00 am.

An eyewitness said residents of Jiwa and Karmo, conterminous communities to Gwagwa, participated in the looting of the warehouse. He said the incident caused a gridlock in the area and he sustained injuries before eventually leaving the scene of the looting.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja later deployed in the area to disperse the looters and secure the building. 

The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters. She, however, added that the situation had been brought under control. “The situation is now under control,” she said.

Eighteen-Eleven Media reports that there have been protests over the rising cost of living in different parts of the country in recent times which has culminated in rallies by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) last week.

There have also been reports across the country of citizens looting trailers conveying food items reminiscence of 2020, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic where relief items meant to cushion the effect of the lockdown were looted.
