Lagos: Customs Destroys 48 Containers Of Prohibited Pharmaceutical Drugs

In a move aimed at ridding society of illicit and prohibited drugs, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has destroyed 48 containers of seized pharmaceutical drugs in Lagos.

The destruction of the condemned drugs was done at the LAWMA waste destruction site in Epe, Lagos State in conjunction with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Top delegations who led the destruction mission include the Assistant Comptroller-General, Enforcement, Inspection and Investigation, Usman Darkingari, the Apapa Area Controller, Malanta Yusuf and the mouthpiece of the Service, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Timi Bomodi.

Speaking with newsmen at the destruction site, the ACG attributed prevailing vices like kidnapping, banditry and all forms of insecurity in the country to the intake of these illicit pharmaceuticals.

“These types of drugs like tramadol fuel banditry, armed robbery, terrorism and insecurity in the country, that is why the federal government, through the Customs and NAFDAC regularly mop up these drugs from circulation,” he said.

According to him, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) mandated the destruction of the illicit drugs in synergy with relevant sister Agencies, he noted also that a total number of forty-eight (48) Containers of prohibited drugs will be grounded in some days to come.
