A total of eight suspected mobile phone snatchers have been apprehended in Kano.

The arrests, which were in three phases, led to the recovery of nine handsets, a knife, a handcuff and two operational tricycles.

In a press statement issued by the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kingawa, the first set of suspects, numbering four, were arrested at about 12:55 pm on 23 April 20243 by policemen on routine crime prevention patrol.

According to the Command’s spokesman, they were cruising in a tricycle on the Airport Road when the operatives suspected and accosted them, resulting in a stop-and-search exercise conducted on them.

An on-the-spot search on them further revealed their membership of a gang of phone snatchers, operating with a tricycle. Seven mobile phones and a handcuff were recovered from them.

The suspects, according to the statement, confessed to using the tricycle to snatch handsets.

Prior to that incident, on 19 April 2024, another set of three suspects, using tricycle for their criminal acts, were arrested on account of a report made to the police by one Aminu Sulaiman.

Sulaiman complained that his mobile phone was stolen from his vehicle at Matrix Filling Station on BUK Road, Kano.

On receipt of the report, a team of detectives swung into action and, with the help of technical support, the three suspects were arrested, and the phone, as well as their ‘get-away’ tricycle, were recovered.

Also, according to the PPRO, on 23 April 2024, at about 09:00 am, a distress call was received from a good samaritan that unknown hoodlums on board a tricycle attacked and robbed an innocent passenger of his mobile phone.

“On receipt of the report, a team of surveillance patrol immediately swung into action and, after a hot chase, arrested one of the suspects and the mobile phone and a sharp knife exhibits were all recovered from him“, the Command’s spokesman disclosed.

All the suspects were, at the time of filing this report, undergoing interrogation at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), following which they would be charged in court.

On the strength of these developments, the state Commissioner of Police reiterated the determination of the Command to provide a safe and more secure environment for all residents of the state.

While appreciating the good people of the state for their support and cooperation with the police in checkmating the activities of hoodlums, the CP also urged everyone to remain vigilant and keep reporting any suspicious movement of person(s) or item(s) they come across to the nearest police station or through Kano State Police Command emergency contact numbers:- 08032419754, 08123821575, 09029292926, or log-in to the NPF Rescue Me Application available in the Play Store, or through the following online media platforms.
