A combined team of policemen attached to the Kano State Police Command and the Department of State Security (DSS) on Tuesday, 7 May raided and arrested 17 illegal Bureau De Change operators in the state.

In the operation conducted in the Wappa area of the state, a total of 29 suspects were initially arrested, out of which 12 were screened for lack of evidence.

The Command, through its spokesman (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, in a statement, disclosed that the suspects, who operated under one association of unlicensed Bureau De Change, would be charged in court.

According to the Command’s spokesman, exhibits recovered from the suspect were a sum of Sixty-Eight Thousand (68,000) CFA, and Thirty Rupees (Indian currency).

He explained that the motive behind the operation was “to flush out elements that operate illegally, in order to stabilise the foreign exchange market in the country, adding that the arrest excluded genuine Bureau de Change operators who carry on their legitimate businesses in their offices.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel has, however, commended the combined operatives of the Nigeria Force and the DSS for their commitment and cooperation in ensuring the success of the operation that, according to him, “sends the message that illegal financial activities will not be tolerated, and those engaging in such practices will be facing the full wrath of the law”.

CP Gumel, consequently, advised all individuals and business operators within the financial sector to operate within the confines of the law and obtain the necessary licenses, and always avoid unwholesome practices.

While appreciating the good people of the state for their support, cooperation and understanding, the state police helmsman encouraged the inhabitants to keep reporting any suspicious movement of person(s) or item(s) they come across to the nearest police station or through the following Kano State Police Command emergency contact numbers:-  08032419754, 08123821575, 09029292926, or log-in to the NPF Rescue Me Application available in the Play Store, or through the following Online Media Platforms:
